EARLY PHOTOGRAPHS

In 1966, SuZen took her first photography class. Immediately, she fell in love with photographing and working in the darkroom - where she spent many hours, days and years - exploring and experimenting.

One of her earliest photographs "Men of NY"(1966) is part of an photo essay, SuZen did while taking her first photography class. This photo was created by sandwiching 2 negatives together - one of which is a double exposure. Even then, SuZen was exploring the multiple realities that exist as well as pushing the medium.

Ballerina (1969) This photograph brings 2 images of the same dancer together in different positions to create a harlequin effect.

Inside Out(1972) It is a straight photograph - absolutely no darkroom tricks. It's a reflection! This photograh was the beginning of many straight images reflecting the duality that exists.

The photograph, "Self Portrait" (1969) on the front page under EARLY PHOTOS is a self-portrait of SuZen. She is both holding the camera and is also in the lens. This image is a montage - created in the darkroom.
